Last week I saw two women sitting in the Serena Lounge having a coffee and chatting away. I'd been feeling a little lonely, (not that Paul's company has not been great, but I'm by myself quite a bit of the day) and I missed having a coffee and a chat with friends. Soooo, I screwed up my courage and went over and introduced myself. I'm so glad I did!

They are lovely nurses from the US and before long they invited me to join a group of workers from the HRH health initiative, for drinks at Heaven (restaurant) the next night. Paul and I went and to our amazement joined a group of about 25 people drinking and eating and having a great time. We had a great time too. We met lots of people, dentists, nurses, physicians, economists, geologists, designers etc.from all over the world, working in Rwanda. There seems to be a whole community of workers who work internationally mainly teaching. Unbelievably one of Paul's students from U of M was there with her husband and children. He is a Pediatrician teaching at a local community hospital.

The fun was not over and the next night I was invited to join them at the Rwandan Cultural Fashion Show at the Mille Collines Hotel. (Remember the movie, Hotel Rwanda, this was the hotel) It was great, I felt like I was really on the runway, sort of! I took lots of pictures and the designers were from Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi and Ghana.

| loved these two! |
The models were all really slim, just like in the US, although most women are not that size. One woman in our group bought a dress that was in the show at the "after party". It cost $40! Not bad for an original designer dress.

There was a section on "cultural" dress,
not for every day!

I had my eye on this strapless black and red print but I couldn't imagine where/when I would wear it.
Enjoy the Show!!

Hi Deb, I gave been enjoying your blog sooooo much. The fashion show was fascinating! I want to dress like that! From your first posting I have felt like I am there with you. In fact, the first entry came at 3am and I woke up, read it and dreamt that I was in Rwanda with you and Paul! Paul climbed a ladder and took a bowl shaped light fixture off the light, filled it with some liquids, swirled them around with his hand and made a snowy substance! I was impressed. Then you were outside sliding down a snowy ramp that was errected over a truck. You were practicing a stunt to film for your blog! I am so happy for you and Paul, that you are sharing this wonderous adventure. Thanks so much for sharing it with us! :) XXXOOO
ReplyDeleteHey Lucille! Paul is definately up to some awesome stuff, per your dream. And Deb's blog does show how amazingly talented she is at this sharing of their fantastic adventure. You ARE the dark haired beauty whom I recall from when I lived up there with my dear aunt and sweet uncle, back in the mid 70's, right? I hope all is well with you.
ReplyDeleteAnd "Hello Debra"!! Boy, aren't you the adventurer! I told my world traveler friend about you. She was amazed, too, at where you are. After all, she's traveled around parts like Libya, Yemen, Somalia, then Oman, Pakistan, Strait of Hormuz, Bahrain, Iraq, Syria. She's been to Greece, twice, Turkey, Paris, France, Portugal, Behrain. And maybe Djabouti, the horn, Gulf of Aden. She's glad she's home now, though... back in college. I think she wants to get her Phd., eventually just to keep up with Ash (or show her up, cuz Ash is now an N.P.-- very exciting).
We'll have to catch up on the latest with each other... Zoe and all, your Dad, and anything that pops up. Your Dad's wife's maiden name may be a way to catch me on Skype. You could get my phone number through someone else, Jen, maybe, if you ever wanted to get filled in on more info., like to Skype, or my friend, as I am discreet to a point, on the internet.
So I could definately see you introducing yourself to this new group, which I'm sure you and Paul will remain friends with. And the dress you picked out, from the awesome fashion show, I could definately see you in, as well.
And yes, I have seen the movie Rwanda and was amazed with it! That you were in that same hotel is crazy! How cool are you, lol!
I certainly couldn't imagine you bored for long. And so it goes.... :) I'm sure you'll have a lovely hub of friends. :) Me, I live vicariously through my kids, lol. I'm always happy to be the photographer when they're doing special things. Or the poet, to put their adventures into words.
Hugs to you and Paul. ((((♡)))) You'll have to tell me how this adventure came about. Keep up the great job on your blog. Oh, and those slacks outfits in the show were cool, weren't they? Colorful, yet rather western looking.
Ttyl. Love you, K.
P.S. Can you get me the "lampshade" one? Argh, argh!
ReplyDeleteDebra, Happy Birthday in Rwanda tomorrow! And may your birthday be the start of a fascinating and fulfilling year! Karen, thanks for the flattering memory of a young me. Wishing you all the best :)
